BREAKFAST PERIODIC TABLE

Gastronimica: The Journal of Food and Culture, vol. 9, no. 2, p.122. 2009 by Catherine Weese.

"Cereal is an emblem of industrial artifice, and this table addresses it's design evolution. After extensive research in the supermarket breakfast-foods aisle, I divided the cereals I found into five categories based on shape: the square or orthogonal, the flake, the "grain", the round and its variations, and the "fake". The table orders them in rows by shape; within each row they are in chronological order according to the date of their introduction into the market (indicated by the "elemental" number on top left). Subsidiary information includes nutritional data, price (which is no longer up-to-date), and manufacturer.

Over the course of my research I was struck by how American breakfast cereals, perhaps unwittingly, participated in the design trends of the times. The gridded shape of Shredded Wheat, the first mass-marketed cereal (1894), celebrates the industrial process and the prospect of uniformity. The flake and grain are stylized renditions of cereal's natural origins, an almost Arts and Crafts sensibility. The next geometric shape to appear on the market was the ball (Kix, 1937); its abstraction, subverted by playful connotations, ushered in a new era of cereal that targets children. Finally, the "fake" cereals emerging in the 1950s brought in the postmodern era, in which cereal pretends to be something else. My personal favorite in this category is Crunchberries (1968), and breakfast cereal imitating breakfast cereal. Its square pillows and red berries are a miniaturized version of Shredded Wheat with Raspberries, as depicted on the product's box. Thus, cereal completes its tour of twentieth-century design, from early modernism to wistful anti-industrialism to cheeky postmodern quotation."

....a really entertaining article in Gastronomica's Spring issue. I couldn't find Weese's full table online so this will have to suffice. If you're interested in this food quarterly feel free to email me-- I'll lend ya a copy!

TAMPOPO (1985)

So sexy.

Discussion in class about the power of food in Asian cultures made me think of one of my favorite films, Tampopo, directed by Juzo Itami. Here are a couple of my favorite scenes.

Nothing wrong with food culture x spaghetti western flicks! Check it out if you haven't already!

R.I.P.

(Rodebjer batwing cardigan)

So my purse was stolen at a house party over the weekend and I lost this little guy-- it was one of my favorites. Inside my bag was my passport, a circle scarf in the yummiest pink, debit card, school notes, my prized make-up... but I am really hung up about losing this piece! I'm on the hunt for another one, think I can track one down?

Oh. And if that wasn't enough I had my backpack stolen less than a couple weeks ago, and inside was my LD Tuttles (along with make-up, ray-bands, superfutures, textbooks, VPL bra, IPOD, among other things too painful to mention). Remember how I lost the ankle strap back in January? Yeah, well now the whole damn pair is missing. FML. BUT. Good news, LD Tuttle is releasing the same boot but in brown this coming Fall '09. Check out the collection here, it's hot hot hot as always. I'm picking myself up a new pair of Nebula's the day the collection is released.

Reading for Leisure

That's what I've been sort of up to. I always fantasize about reading for leisure and now due to more than just one unforeseen changes in my life they have rendered me much free time. So I've decided to make these fanciful notions reality.

"Lapham's Quarterly sets the story of the past in the frame of the present. Four times a year the editors seize upon the most urgent question then current in the headlines - foreign war, financial panic, separation of church and state - and find answers to that question from authors whose writings have passed the test of time. The method assumes that profound observations of the human character and predicament don't become obsolete."

History

"There is one mind common to all individual man. Every man is an inlet to the same and to all of the same. He that is once admitted to the right of reason is made a freeman of the whole estate. What Plato has thought, he may think; what a saint has felt, he may feel; what at any time has befallen any man, he can understand. Who hath access to this universal mind is a party to all that is or can be done, for this is the only and sovereign agent.
Of the works of this mind history is the record. Its genius is illustrated by the entire series of days. Man is explicable by nothing less than all his history. Without hurry, without rest, the human spirit goes forth from the beginning to embody every faculty, every thought, every emotion, which belongs to it in appropriate events. But the thought is always prior to the fact; all the facts of history preexist in the mind as laws. Each law in turn is made by circumstances predominant, and the limits of nature give power to but one at a time. A man is the whole encyclopedia of facts. The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn, and Egypt, Greece, Rome, Gaul, Britain, America, lie folded already in the first man. Epoch after epoch, camp, kingdom, empire, republic, democracy, are merely the application of his manifold spirit to the manifold world."

Wish List Item #7: ATP 2009 Tickets, bitch!

Um, someone needs to buy me tickets ($$$$$235) to this 3-day festival taking place in upstate NY. All Tomorrow's Parties is an organization based out of London whom promotes art and music events across the globe. Lucky for us, the Flaming Lips will be curating NY's this coming year on Sep 11-13th, 2009. ATP thrives on world-renowned experimental artists and musicians/bands who curate the entire lineup each year, resulting in fabulous and innovative times for all. And again, Criterion (love!!) will be hosting the cinema, I wonder what'll be playing. David Cross will be curating the comedy stage!

This is very, very similar to Portland's Time Based Art Festival. It will all be taking place in one space, this time at Kutsher's Country Resort; it starts midday with live art and musical performances, there will be DJs spinning into the night, flicks to watch, and of course food and draaaank. In other words, heaven. Take me, take me, take me.

Honestly, though, if anyone in the Portland area is interested in flying with me to NY to attend the festival then email me. Tickets are selling like hotcakes.

BLESS

No. 28: Fat Knit Hammock

What do I say about BLESS? Honestly, I've been trying to figure out their "thing" for awhile now and I'll have to admit that I don't get it.

Desiree Heiss and Ines Kaag met back in 1993 in Paris and formed BLESS in 1995, posting ads all over Berlin and Vienna of their newly formed label. Eventually their name caught wind and by 1996 they were advertising in i-D magazine, self service, and purple magazine.

No. 31: Hairhoody

A highly conceptual label, the duo finds obscure and random ideas/themes-- anything from hotel amenities (No. 20) to the act of "covering" (No. 21) to "privacy" (No. 22) to using electrical cables and adaptors to make jewelry (No. 26) and creates products/exhibitions centered around them. They often bring in guest artists to help materialize their visions.

From beautiful yet strange mobiles to towel scarves to cute sweaters, these two do it all. Their interpretations of everyday necessities and luxuries would make anyone chuckle a bit, and you'll see why when you check out the site. Much of it, it seems, is abstractly thought out and well executed, but with elements of levity and  innocence, as well.

What's New?

Heeeeey. So I'm gearing up for school and thus haven't had time to do shit on here-- I know, more excuses. But really, what's new? Ha. Here's more footage from my trip to keep ya'all entertained. I promise more substantial posts soon!

Pineapple, mango, banana!

We'd buy fruit from this lady who'd walk up and down the beach all fucking day in the heat workin' what she's got. Homegirl's got stamina. And pineapple-cutting skills.

Please check out the Mini Travel Series that Ray and I did whilst traveling around China, HK, and Vietnam if you haven't already!

I'M BACK

Monotonix outside the venue... scantily clad... performing on a drum... in the air, now that's drama (image via MFNW)

Okay, homegirl's been out boozin' and usin' for the past couple months trying to live up the last moments of summer before school starts. Now I'm back with sweet material to share. I'm going to try to re-vamp this site a little, so in the meantime check out footage of the TBA Festival and MusicFestNW. Just blips of a two-week long binge of music and performing arts.

Monotonix @ The Satyricon (fucking chaotic!)

More of this show here and here. Totally worth watching.

Also attended No Age, Battles, Cool Kids, Deerhunter, Dyme Def, Black Elk, The Joggers, Trans AM, Polvo. Daaamn.

My footage of his performance was lame so here's one from The New Museum in NY.

I think we all know which performance was better.

Raymond and Khathy Mini Travel Series

Fishing boats in Nha Trang, Vietnam

So, there won't be any more updates for a few days. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get all my schoolwork completed before the term ended and I'm only now beginning to wrap it all up. So, rather than spending time blogging I need to be homeworking!

Also! Big news. My bestest Ray and I (and the fam) will be leaving this Friday for our long awaited trip to China/Hong Kong/Vietnam. We will be gone from the 27th of this month to July 25th. Don't fret though, my lovelies, because we will be documenting our adventures and posting them as often as we can! The Raymond and Khathy Mini Travel Series will include video-recordings along with photographs of all the wonders of our excursions in the East. So stay tuned (all three of you)!
